FEM-ABLE, Promoting Women's Participation in Politics

La Xixa is one of the partner organizations of the FEMABLE project.

For most of the history of democracy, women were not allowed to participate in politics, neither as voters nor as candidates. This changed in the 19th century with the women's suffrage movement, and by 2015, all countries had granted women the right to vote.

However, in 2019, women occupied only 24.3% of parliamentary seats globally, and women's political power is insufficient in Europe according to the Gender Equality Index.

Despite efforts to increase gender equality in politics, the political sphere continues to be a challenge for women: they are underrepresented in political decision-making at all levels: regional, national, and local government.

Fem-able Project

The FEM-ABLE project aims to promote gender equality in political decision-making through the development of evidence-based national strategies and collaboration with stakeholders to integrate research findings into national policy. The project contributes to a more equitable representation of women and men in political decision-making, leading to more inclusive and equitable societies.

The project also aims to research and measure the underlying reasons that perpetuate low scores of female political power and provide solutions and innovative means to promote women in politics and participation at national and European levels. For the purposes of this project, women's political participation is identified as women occupying key positions of political power.

Our association of seven organizations from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden is focused on promoting gender equality in politics and empowering women to actively participate in political decision-making.

What activities are we carrying out in the FEM-ABLE project?

  • A technical and field study to identify and assess existing gender equality strategies in national contexts and determine the gaps, needs, and expectations of women participating in the political and youth voting sphere of both genders.

  • Design of 7 national strategies and 1 European strategy to promote equality between women and men in political decision-making.

  • Local implementation of National Strategies through workshops and other participatory activities involving male and female voters/candidates, gender equality bodies, political parties, NGOs, public authorities, academic staff, etc.
